Hardwood Furniture, Timeless Beauty With Unmatched Quality

Hardwood furniture is timeless, with a combination of beauty and durability unmatched by any other material. Hardwood material is incredibly highly valued when it comes to constructing high-end furniture for its innate classic beauty, natural warmth and phenomenal durability. The elegant coloration of natural wood in solid wood furniture matches both traditional and modern interiors impeccably.

Classic Wood Furniture With Longevity

At Empower Renovations Pte Ltd, we provide a wide range of hardwood options including wood from mahogany, asana and rain trees.

What makes hardwood furniture different?

Hardwood furniture is desirable for the honesty and integrity in traditional workmanship methods such as wood joinery. Instead of utilizing nails common in regular wood furniture that may not hold up well in humid weather, hardwood furniture makes use of interlocking wood joints that utilize the distinctive material properties of solid wood to increase the wood’s sturdiness, flexibility, appearance and even longevity.

Material Selection

The carcass for cabinet-work may be made from a combination of timber products, aluminium or glass. This section focuses on the different timber products commonly used in the local industry.

Plywood

Formed by gluing several thin layers of timber (e.g. plies of softwood or hardwood), with the grains of adjacent layers oriented at right angles to one other. The dimension variation of the plywood shall comply with the BS EN 315.

  • Available in various thicknesses
  • Provides an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, and exhibits superior stiffness along both the length and width of the panel
  • Need to cover the unsightly edges
  • Poor warping tolerance

Moisture Resistant Plywood

Made of selected hardwood veneers for the required strength and stiffness. Commonly used for kitchen cabinet carcass.

  • Special glue, fortified with melamine, makes it more resistant to moisture than other plywood materials that use the ordinary Urea-Formaldehyde (UF) glue
  • Preservative treated to protect it from fungus, borer, insects and termite attack

Medium Density Fibre (MDF) Board

Dry-formed panel product manufactured by applying high pressure and heat to wood pulp impregnated with resin. Commonly used for cabinet door panel to create 3D profile or for spray painting finish.

  • Available in various thicknesses
  • Tough and hardy surface with high stability
  • Good for profile cutting as smooth finishes on both sides of the panel can be obtained

Particle Board / Chipboard

Made from timber chips bonded by synthetic resins to form boards (sheets) under pressure and heat. Two ways of manufacturing chipboard: the extruded method and the platen press method. Commonly used for wardrobe, kitchen cabinet, drawer and door panels.

  • Stable and hardy surface
  • Environment friendly
  • Good fire resistance and air tightness
  • Low Stiffness

Finishing

The type of finishes for wardrobes and kitchen cabinets depend on a variety of factors such as
design specificiations, client’s requirements and project budget.

Veneer

Slices of wood skin from tree logs are used. Formed by either slicing or rotary cutting. Veneers are differentiated according to its structure, colour, and characteristics. Different processing methods adopted determine the size and appearance (striped, flame-pattern, etc.) of the veneers. Commonly used on door panel and exposed panels.

  • Environmental friendly as fewer trees are used to make a veneer than the same size of solid timber board
  • Could discolor under exposure to natural light
  • Could get water stained, hence not suitable for use in wet area

Melamine

A thermosetting plastic, composed of a decorative sheet of paper which is covered with a transparent layer of melamine resin. Commonly used on wardrobe carcass, drawer and door panel.

  • High resistance against scratch, shock and abrasion
  • Strong and hard surface
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Resistant to fungus, borer and household chemicals
  • Not ideal for use in high humidity area like bathroom, wet kitchen and sauna

High Pressure Laminate

The most commonly used finishing layer for MDF, plywood, particle board, wooden furniture.Essentially, a composite artificial material, they are made by pressing together thin layers of flat paper and plastic resins. The upper layer is printed with a decorative pattern or color. Commonly used on door panel and exposed panel.

  • Easily sourced and available in wide range of colours, texture designs
  • Much more resistant to moisture alongside wear and tear.
  • Low-maintenance, stain-repellent material
  • Scratch resistant

Solid Wood

Solid wood is a natural product obtained by logging fully grown and matured trees that have fallen or been cut off.

  • Solid wood retains its appearance, achieving a lovely patina as it ages.
  • Tough and impressive durability.
  • Repairs are relatively easy as the wood is the same throughout.
  • Environmental, solid wood furniture is eco-friendly. Apart from being sourced from managed forests, solid wood furniture uses very little energy during the production process.

Polykem

A layer of polymer film which is usually coated onto a piece of plywood, commonly used on the carcass of drawers.

  • Superior anti-corrosion protection against oil, gas, water and chemicals
  • Scratch resistant

Edge Band

The edge band serves both a protective and design function, the common types of edge band used comes in a wide range of colours and wood grain patterns.

Acrylonitile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)

  • Available in various widths from 1mm to 3mm
  • Environmental friendly
  • High heat resistant

Tips On Selecting Materials For Your Kitchen

Cabinets

  • The most common materials are plywood laminate and melamine particleboard
  • For a wider range of customisation options, plywood laminate is best recommended, it can be customised with
thousands of possible designs — meaning that you can even make your cabinets look like concrete or stone or
    many more materials.
  • Plywood laminate also has the advantage of being stronger and hardier than melamine.
  • Melamine particleboard is significantly cheaper and highly recommended if you’re on a tight budget.

Cabinet Doors

  • Acrylic or polycarbonate doors come in a glossy finish, due to an added plastic layer on the outside.
  • For a modern look try 3G and 4G glass doors, these have an aluminium frame with a groove to fit your fingers into for easier operation. 3G frames are larger while 4G frames are slimmer.
  • If you’d like to show off your crockery collection, you can invest in tempered glass, however as tempered glass is a heavy material you will also need to install stronger hinges, which will add to your total cost

Countertops

  • Most Singaporean homes use either granite, solid surface or quartz countertops.
  • Granite is heat-proof, so hot pans and pots can be placed on a granite countertop without fear of damaging it. Of these three materials, granite is the costliest, and can be difficult to repair if chipped or scratched. However, without regular sealing, granite’s porous nature means that it can absorb oil and water, and eventually discolour or stain over time.
  • Customisable with hundreds of different designs, solid surface countertops are completely waterproof and won’t absorb spills. However, they are more susceptible to damage from heat or chemicals.
  • Quartz, also known as engineered stone, is made of compressed quartz, pigment colours and polymer resin. It can be seen as a hybrid of solid surface and granite, and takes the best traits from both. Like solid surface, it is non-porous, and it inherits some degree of granite’s resistance to heat and chemicals. Its appearance can also be
    customised to fit any kitchen.
